Usually I walk in a room and I’m free to smell things...or not smell them. It’s up to me. But today I walked in the room, and before I could choose, an aroma was beating my nostrils...like, “SMELL ME!! SMELL ME!!!!” Quite oppressive really.
So I thought about freedom. The freedom to breathe, listen, speak, remain silent. And you know what? I like being free! Hearing my thoughts. Having time to form thoughts, answers, questions, comments. Or to just let my mind rest from thinking, imagining, and remembering.
Freedoms.
We talk a lot in this country about our “precious freedoms” and how "some people in this world want to take these freedoms away from us." But really, many Americans invade and pervade and persuade beyond any one’s ability to enjoy liberty. Take learning to read. (My wife showed me this truth.)
From the time a child can read, he is bombarded with words. She is bombarded by billboards and advertisements. We can’t turn this off. Written words speak, whether we want to listen to them or not. But God is not like this. He’s not constantly talking our ears off.
“Now the Lord is the Spirit, and where the Spirit of the Lord is there is liberty.”
“It is for freedom Christ has set you free.”
God likes us to be as free as He is, in our own context of course.
He alone is PERFECTLY free.
But we are perfectly free, relatively.
You are free to read or stop reading right now.
I’m free to write or stop writing.
We both should promote as much freedom to others as we can, and we should respect the total freedom of God. (Which ironically we don’t. We forget that we are free to act, and that God is free to stop us.)
When I walk into a room, my "body lotion" should not oppress, but should rather CARESS, your nose! You should feel free to smell me...or not smell me. And if you choose to experience my fragrance, it should bring joy to the freedom of inhaling and exhaling!
